Chairs - way more sophisticated that we may know!

As someone who has different needs than most when it comes to an office chair, I have - over 3 years - been searching for the perfect one and I tell ya - it's been challenging as there aren't many places to test them out and it's like a pair of shoes - wearing in a store for 10 minutes vs daily use for weeks is never the same.

Here are some things I considered:

  1. Ergonomics:

  • Adjustable features like seat height, lumbar support, armrests, and tilt. Ergonomic chairs are designed to provide proper support and promote good posture, reducing the risk of discomfort and musculoskeletal issues.

  1. Comfort and Fit:

  • Sit in the chair and assess its comfort. Your feet should rest flat on the floor or a footrest, and your knees should be at a 90-degree angle. The chair should provide adequate cushioning and support for your body shape.

  1. Quality Materials and Durability:

  • This is an investment!  High-quality materials that can withstand daily use are a must. Durable upholstery, a sturdy frame, and strong casters are essential for longevity. Leather, mesh, and fabric are common upholstery choices, each with its pros and cons.

  1. Size and Space:

  • I am fortunate enough to have some space to work with but I learned that the seat size is more important than I thought when reading dimensions.

  1. Budget and Brand Reputation:

  • Determine your budget and explore options within that range - I started low and 3 chairs later have doubled my budget. While it's tempting to go for the cheapest option, prioritize quality and features that meet your needs. Research reputable brands known for producing reliable office chairs with good warranties.

Read Reviews and Seek Recommendations:

  • Before making a final decision, read online reviews and ask for recommendations from colleagues or friends who have comfortable office chairs. Their experiences can provide valuable insights into the chair's performance and comfort over time.

I worked in office supply distribution for many years so am very glad to have the product knowledge I have to help me through this process but most do not know the intricacies of an office chair - ask for help!  Reach out to a reputable manufacturer and visit their showroom, they have professionals on staff to help and just because you visit them does not mean you have to buy from them - use the info you learn to make the best decision for your situation.

Remember that the "best" office chair is subjective and depends on your specific needs and preferences. Take your time to test chairs and compare options to find the one that suits you best in terms of comfort, ergonomics, durability, and style.
